Tears of A Clown

The opera ‘Pagliacci’ is the story of a clown who is hiding their broken heart from the world, behind a false external mask of joy. This tale depicts the truth of how many people are wearing metaphorical masks daily, in an attempt to disguise their inner turmoil and pain.

For many decades the excitement of children's parties was centred around the main source of entertainment…the clown. The clown was the prime feature of many childhood celebrations, and no childrens party was complete without one. Their brightly coloured and loud costumes, complete with wild hair, bright red nose, and the generic painted on fake smile, were billed as the main event. But those times have changed forever.

2016 was the beginning of the so-called ‘clown apocalypse’ as many unsavoury and threatening characters began to dress-up in the image of a clown. Even well known brands have seized to use this image of the friendly and fun clown as their mascot, as this became widely perceived negatively as a ‘creepy character’. Yet even before this time period some children naturally had an instant dislike of clowns, and this was for a very good reason.

Both children and animals are highly attuned to the true energy of other people, much more than adults generally are. This is mainly because unlike adults both children and animals are not distracted by the numerous responsibilities and external factors, that can often interfere with the discernment and protective aspects of their intuition. Children have the natural ability to see past whatever external mask is being shown, even though this innate gift is rarely expressed.

Nevertheless there are still many people who are living their life today within this falsehood of energy. They are consciously choosing to display a fake smile, while behind their masks hides a multitude of sins. Behind these masks sit years of discontent, insecurity, frustration and anger, from both their refusal and quite often their inability to show the world their true colours. This is an individual who is living in constant fear of their mask slipping. It must be completely soul destroying to have to remove a mask every night, and come face to face with someone you do not recognise. It must be even more painful to have to face someone you don’t even like, when you have stepped away from the external world and you are by yourself. This is someone you are doing everything in your power to keep hidden from not only yourself and the world as a whole, but sadly this is someone who you are attempting to keep hidden from the people closest to you. The people who believe they know you better than anyone.

Adults are sleep walking through their life with unhealed trauma, much of which stems from unhealed inner-child wounds. They are rebelling against the essence of their authentic spirit and identity and suffering in silence, when what they need to do is use their time and energy to destroy any external facade and fight their inner demons. These are grown adults who have been lied to and misled from a young age. These are predominantly adults who have been ridiculed, mocked or bullied from childhood, for showing vulnerability by either speaking their mind, expressing their heart, or not following the crowd.

What they have not been correctly taught and nurtured to understand, is the truth that intentionally masking or hiding any part of your authentic self, is a recipe for disaster. Just as the downfall of the clown has become a positively conscious decision in society, so too is there a desperate need for many people to make the positively conscious decision to do the vital shadow work desperately needed behind their masks. With the correct guidance these secretly suppressed tears which are being shed undercover, can become healing tears of joy. We all have a greater responsibility to free ourselves from the many dangerous narratives that are keeping so many people hidden from a gifted life of honesty, peace, and ultimately…freedom.
